DEBORAH PLUTZIK BRIGGS
VP, P.A.C.E. & Community
Deborah is the daughter of poet Hyam Plutzik and wife of a composer Jeffery Briggs. She is founder of and chief maven for The Writer’s Room with her brother (and Betsy owner) Jonathan Plutzik.
As Vice President for P.A.C.E. & Community at The Betsy, Executive Director of the PG Family Foundation, and Director of The Betsy Community Fund at the Miami Foundation, she’s forged new pathways for artists and thinkers to come together around ‘things that matter’ – through the Betsy Writers Room and through partnerships with over 200 community partners in South Florida, under the auspices of Betsy’s PACE program (Philanthropy, Arts, Culture, and Education).
Deborah led Betsy’s successful effort to secure a Knight Arts Challenge Grant to capitalize The Writer’s Room. She shares her time between Baltimore, New York, and Miami.
Director, Escribe Aquí and Writers for Young Readers
Pablo Cartaya directs two of The Betsy’s key Writer’s Room projects: Escribe Aqui and Writers For Young Readers. He is the author of the forthcoming middle-grade books, The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora and Marcus Vega Doesn’t Speak Spanish (Viking Children’s Books/Penguin Random House), and the co-author of the picture book, Tina Cocolina: Queen of the Cupcakes (Random House Children’s Books). Pablo has led the development of various literary programs through The Betsy-South Beach’s Philanthropy, Arts, Culture, and Education programs and has served on many panels and presentations. He holds an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a BA from Loyola Marymount University and currently serves as lead faculty for at Sierra Nevada College’s low residency MFA in the Writing for Children and Young Adults track. He calls Miami home.
JEAN BLACKWELL FONT
Senior Manager, Philanthropy and Arts
Jean is a practicing artist and experienced hotel manager. She joined the Betsy Marketing Team in 2011 as Manager of Marketing and Philanthropy, and currently manages The Betsy’s voice and produces all of the digital and print collateral for the hotel’s programs. As part of the P.A.C.E. Team, her role is to research and development partnerships with arts organizations in the community.
Lori Butts is an experienced hospitality professional who joined the PACE team at The Betsy in 2016. She’s is also a respected special events consultant, hotel general manager, and (most impressive of all) the mother of four. Lori is the logistical glue on our team, and will ensure that your ‘Writer’s Room’ stay is perfect in every way.
